Surface current field in the Gulf of Patras induced by the combined action of tide and northeastern wind during summer period. The main characteristic of the hydrodynamic circulation is the strong cyclonic vortex in the middle of the Gulf forcing the waters into a rotational motion. |
The motion of an internal wave is shown at a cross-section along the Rion-Antirion Straits. From the numerical simulations of the summer period, it follows that the action of tide and wind generate internal waves along the Straits, which induce upwelling. Owing to the motion of the internal waves, cold waters enter into the Gulf of Patras at large depths, from the Gulf of Corinth, while warm waters travel in the opposite direction and close to the free surface due to the action of southeastern winds. |
